I've been using Dremels for a long time and always wanted a decent cordless. With the advent of decent cordless power tools (the first one that I had that was actually useful for something was an 18 volt DeWalt drill that went right through stuff my corded drills wouldn't touch, but that's another story) I've been waiting for Dremel to come out with a good cordless.I've been hesitant about the earlier cordless Dremels but this one looks like "it".So far it's done everything I've asked it to do but I haven't asked it to do much--I got it specifically to deal with a piece of acrylic that my cordless Rotozip melted instead of cutting--I figured the adjustable speed on the Dremel would take care of that and was right.Just an aside about stalling--if you're stalling a Dremel then it's time to take a good hard look at a Rotozip, which, if you've never played with one, is kind of a Dremel on steroids--Dremel has an equivalent, the "Advantage", but only the one model and not cordless. The lack of a provision to charge the battery with the tool attached is just carrying through the current practice with cordless tools--it's assumed that one will have two batteries, one on the tool and one on charge if this is an issue. There's space in the case for a second battery.A "gotcha" to be aware of with the lithium ion batteries, always store them charged--if they self-discharge below a certain point a protective circuit kicks in and they disable themselves--this is a safety issue--trying to recharge a lithium ion battery that is discharged below a certain point can result in an explosion (I'm not talking about a little spill--exploding lithium batteries in emergency-locator transmitters have brought down light aircraft). The bundled accessories are, near as I can figure it:Aluminum oxide stone #932 and #8193Silicon carbide stone #84922Aluminum oxide abrasive wheel #5412 rubber polishing wheels #4253 Large felt polishing wheels #4295 Small felt polishing wheels #4141 cutter, looks like a #1811 drill bit, #1501 Mandrel #401 (for felt pads etc)1 Mandrel #402 (for sanding disks, cutoff wheels etc)Sanding cylinder mandrels 1/4" and 1/2"4 80 grit 1/2" sanding cylinders3 120 grit 1/2" sanding cylinders4 80 grit 1/4" sanding cylinders3 120 grit 1/4" sanding cylinders11 sanding disks17 cutoff wheels, 3 are thicker than the others, the others are in two containers of 10 and 4 but can't tell any difference between them.1 wrench with screwdriver tip that fits screws on mandrels1 case with a good deal of unused storage even after all the accessories are stored.

I've used Dremel tools for over 15 years now. I've mainly stuck with the corded ones, as the battery-powered versions tended to run out of charge quickly, had less RPM, were generally heavier and usually had a lot less torque. The lithium version has none of these drawbacks. Because there's no cord it's more comfortable to hold (and much more convenient to use!), about the same weight as a corded model, and has plenty of RPMs and torque. Battery lifetimes are very good, and the "fuel gauge" seems to be reasonably accurate. (Exactly how long a charge will last depends greatly on what you're using it for--working on balsa wood uses a lot less power than, say, grinding metal.)Battery charge times are quite short, about three hours to charge a completely empty battery. (But thanks to a "smart charger" it should only take a few minutes to charge it after a typical job.) An added bonus is that lithium batteries hold their charges practically forever, so there's no need to "trickle charge" them; just charge it back up after you're done with it and put it away, and it'll be ready to use the next time you need it.The only nit I've found so far is the need to remove the battery to charge it. (This is probably for safety's sake.) It'd be slightly more convenient to just put the whole unit in the charger after use, but since it doesn't need charging that often this is really minor.I'd consider this to be an entirely practical replacement for a corded Dremel. For everything I use my Dremel for (mostly small models plus the occasional home repair task) this one seems more than adequate. It's a sturdy unit that should last a long time.My one concern about lifetime is how long the lithium battery will last; only time will tell.

Finally, a cordless rotary tool that holds it charge while being stored. Now I don't have to worry about charging my tool's batteries the night before I need it for a project. And the Lithium Ion batteries are environmentally safe--unlike Nickel Cadmium batteries. This tool is surprisingly smooth, yet seems as powerful as my old standby corded Dremel Model 395. At 35,000 RPM it is the fastest cordless rotary tool I've seen on the market. I like the sleek, ergonomic design. Based upon my previous experience with Dremel tools, I expect this tool to be trouble free for a long time.

I bought one of these at a local brick & mortar store for a project I'm working on. I am impressed with the power of the device and it is a really neat tool, but unfortunatley I've already had to return two of them for a defective speed control. While using it, the first one all of a sudden just jumped up to full speed and stayed there regardless of where the speed control was set. In other words, it was no longer variable. The second one did the same thing. Since I saw replacement brushes available for their tools (and therefore they must consider it somewhat user serviceable) I decided to open it up and see what it looked like inside. One of the transistors on the circuit board had gotten warm enough to melt the solder and shorted out two of the pins on the transistor. I'm on my third one now (just returned them at the store) and I first bought one about 2-1/2 weeks ago. Great tool but Dremel needs to work on their quality control.

I've used Dremel tools for years, but never actually owned one, so this year, after taking up RC airplane building as a hobby (Dad really wanted a boy ;-) ), I decided to go with the Li-Ion Model 8000. The Li-Ion technology is incredible, plenty of power, no memory effect, keeps it's charge...just about perfect.
One of the reasons I went with a Dremel was the attachments, here's where the disappointment comes in...many of the attachments don't fit this model (I hope I can add the word "yet"). So if you're ordering this and it's your only Dremel, make certain the attachment says it fits the 8000...don't assume, like I did, that there is backwards compatibility...there isn't. I learned this the hard way with both router table and hand-held router.
If you're considering this, an incredibly handy addition is the chuck...no more messing with collets...hooray! Also, you'd be wise to buy the 145 piece accessory kit, it adds a lot more versatility in cutting, shaping, and grinding.
All said, this is one of my favorite tools...now if Dremel would make some cool accessories that fit it, I'd be giving this five stars, rather than four!

I had a dream I could find a small, rotary power tool that I could easily wield in one hand with accuracy approaching a dentist's drill. It was a tool not only convenient in size but did not have a heavy cord constantly "catching" on my chair, back of my arm, on the corner of the table etc. It was nearly as powerful as a corded version and ball-raced so it was quiet and smooth in operation. At my local home store amid the squeaking and clattering of lumbar carts and smell of cut pine I was awakened to the realization my dream may have come true...and her name was Dremel?? (Dr.Freud would have fun with me) The Dremel Model 800 Lithium-Ion Cordless (not 8000 as Amazon states) will not replace an orthodontist's precision $1000, stainless instrument. At under $ however, it's about as close as it gets. No dreaded anticipation here as this little Dremel is quite fun.
br /
br /I have owned three Dremels, this is number three and my first cordless. The previous two worked adequately, nothing to shout about just did their job as expected. I would never purchase Dremel's previous cordless models and haven't to date. Small, cordless tools usually equate to poor power and no torque. There have been several earlier models at 7.2v and 4.8 termed MultiPro and MiniMite respectively. The consensus I've found were that torque and power were abysmal. I had a great deal of concern regarding this "new version". Would it actually replace my corded Dremels? In a word, yes.
br /
br /With Lithium Ion technology, both torque and power (length of use) I found impressive. It exceeded my expectations. This is not a last minute, dump-something-on-the-market product from Dremel. I have the impression they really put some RD into it. I don't know if the torque is equal to my corded. I can't tell the difference. (A compliment in disquise) The battery lasts longer than anticipated, again another compliment. The 3 LEDs are of questionalbe accuracy, but a nice benchmark to go by. The variable speed dial is quite accurate on mine, allowing me to speed up or slow down with a great deal of control. The fit and finish is as good as any previous model. The battery is easily attached/removed and quite cute. "Why does it remind me of a shoe off a Cabbage Patch doll?"
br /
br /My only significant complaint is ergonomics. I fully admit this may be subjective. As can be seen, the tip has a rubber-like covering for better tactile feel and grip. It is also indented or tapered on the sides and underneath. It feels awkward to me. I think the problem could have been remedied if the tapering circumscribed the entire tip rather than just the sides/bottom. I'm pretty average when it comes to the size of my paws. I couldn't imagine someone with dainty fingers trying to hold this thing with one hand and getting maximum precision. The tool's weight is primarily at the other end, so the tip constantly wants to lift up (battery other end drops down). The center of gravity is toward the back 1/3 of the tool. Similarily for those with large paws I would think the difficulty might arise from the tip being rather narrow and the shaft lock button easily pressed. My solution? I use it inverted with LEDs facing down. This way I don't accidently hit the shaft lock button with my forefinger and the tapering on the bottom is more adapting for it (forefinger).
br /
br /"Bling". Something that pleasantly surprised me was the ability to use many of the same accessories the corded models utilize. I shop for many mini tools from Micro-Mark, a small tool speciality site. In their catalogs it explicitly states the Right Angle Drive, Dremelite, Flexible Shaft and Plunge Router Attachment accept the 800 series, the only cordless model. This makes a huge difference to me as it now opens the world to most of Dremel's attachments for cordless use and at the same time doesn't make my corded model a dinosaur. Best of both worlds, cordless capablity with corded power and attachments, great! The case is another nice surprise. My previous Dremels had tiny, cheap cases that were clearly designed for light hobby use only. This case "appears" like it could be dropped off your roof and survive (no I haven't tried, I don't need Freud's advice that badly). Except for it's plastic hinge, it is of a build similar to my Bosch, Makita and Porter Cable tool cases. It's quite sturdy, capable of holding the unit, charger, accessories and two batteries (one battery in unit). It will also hold the manual in it's lid. A capable design.
br /
br /The Dremel gets five/five stars not because it's perfect as the ergonomics are a bit quirky (to me), but there's nothing currently on the market that equals the Model 800 in price and capability. It's the best of its current class.

br /
br /The Pros:
br /
br /***No more cord!
br /***Impressive torque and power (for cordless)
br /***Pretty good compatibility with Dremel accessories

I bought the Dremel 10.8v rotary cordless drill for the purpose of removing tile grout. At first it worked well. But, the battery only lasted 45 minutes. Then the problems started. The 1/16 inch grout bits only lasted a few minutes then broke. I had better luck when I was removing 1/8 inch grout because the 1/8 inch bit lasted for hours before it started getting dull. Since the grout bits are not well made, I found another brand that cuts much better, much cheaper in price, and last longer.
I HAD to get the grout removed and this was the only tool I found that would do that. But, after a few days the Dremel broke. I still had grout to take care of, so I bought a corded Dremel to continue the work while the cordless was sent in for repairs. To the credit of Dremel, the cordless was promptly repaired and returned along with a free accessory for my trouble. I started using the cordless again and it stopped working again. This time it just stayed on fast speed. So, off it went to the post office again to send in this thing for repair. It is repaired again, but this time I am using the corded Dremel.
I also tried the tool on other jobs such as removing paint from a window frame, sanding a small section of wood, drilling a pilot hole for a screw, and cutting off a screw that I could not remove. What I found was that the Dremel did a fair job if you have a steady hand. However, some of the accessories either break easily or grind down quickly. And these accessories are not cheap. You can easily spend 3 times the price in bits and accessories than what you pay for the tool itself.
The bottom line is, this thing is mostly good for small work such as crafts. But, can also come in handy when a large drill or sander just will not fit. Just stay away from the cordless.

I have owned a dremel corded tool for about 10 years. I wanted a cordless dremel to use at work. I bought a 7.2v cordless...but I did not use it. It did not have enough speed on the high end 15,000 rpm's. I took it back...for a refund. I looked at the 9.6v cordless dremel, but it was too long...the 10.8v cordless dremel... Light weight, fabilous battery, the control knob a plus...I have had it for 1 month and no complaints.

I wish I'd bought one years ago. I've only had it for a month, and I've used it several times. I do wish, however, that I'd bought it at Sears. They sell it for $65.Edit: When I reported the price at Sears to Amazon, Amazon matched Sears price, lowered their price from $75, and gave me a refund on the difference, accounting for the tax that I would have paid here in Indiana. i.e., Amazon stays up with and ahead of competition. I even got free delivery.

I've always wanted a dremel and thought that the cord would be fine. But now I'm glad I went with the cordless. I use it in the back yard, around the house, at work. Not only that, Lithium-Ion technology is outstanding. Blows doors off those old nickel rechargable batteries.Lithium-Ion is the same technology being used in the most current cell phones. It doesn't have memory problems like the old rechargables so you can charge it at any time, YOU DON'T HAVE TO WEAR THE BATTER DOWN BEFORE YOU CHARGE! Also, the charging time is a fraction of what it used to be. If I run out, I put the battery on the charge for less then an hour and I have enough juice to finish the job. Typically, full recharging only takes 3 hours. I highly recommend that you get this dremel (8000-01 10.8 Volt Lithium-Ion) if it is your first time, second dremel, or a dremel enthusiast.

I am not impressed in the least with the 8000-01 model. I have been using dremel's for a number of years now and this is the first one I have purchased.
I am a service tech and do alot of traveling for repairs. I work on a lift or high on a ladder so extension cords are troublesome and possibly dangerous. Most of the places I go have limited outlet availability so the cordless model seemed perfect for me. I have used it less than 2 months and the speed guage is already malfunctioning, the battery lasts about 30 mins at best and it takes 3 hours to charge. I was going to purchase a spare battery but the average price I could find is $45 compared to $70 I paid for the tool. Not very cost effective in my book.

This can be very handy when you need a Dremel tool but can't or don't want to get out the extension cord. Biggest drawback is that it Stalls way too easily and that trips the internal circuit breaker. Then you have to shut off the tool, wait a few seconds, then you can turn it back on. That means that a lot of simple quick jobs are going to take a lot longer than they should have. Only option is to be very very careful not to Stall the tool but then it will still take longer to finish the job. I'm not using this tool anywhere near what I had hoped to, instead I'm getting the extension cord out and using my regular Dremel. Other drawback is that the Battery Packs are very expensive considering their size and power. I would still buy it but overall I'm disappointed with this tool and will continue to look for an alternative that doesn't have this tool's problems.

I love my new cordless Dremel. Put a diamond drill bit in there and I take it along to bead shows. When I need to adjust a bead hold, Viola! All I need is a cup of water. It also comes in handle cleaning out bead release. To me, it is worth its weight in gold.

I am a regular purchaser on Amazon. It's a Dremel and it performs to the standard you would expect from a old time company like Dremel. I am very happy with the purchase. As usual Amazon ships quickly and often gets to me long before the delivery date they show. The battery stays charged even when not in the charger Dremel states will hold 80% charge for four months without being in the charger..The free shipping on items over $25 is a no brainer...

I received this tool for Christmas last year. I rarely used it most of the year because I have a Foredom tool and also a corded Dremel. I kept it because it was a present. I have used it now in carving ducks and some small wooden utensils. I just found out that my rheostat has burned out and the variable speed control doesn't work. Considering the small amount of use that I have put on this tool, I am disappointed in its durability. I would not recommend this tool.

br /Pros:
br / Li-ion cordless has no battery charge memory problems
br / Has adequate power for light tasks
br /
br /Cons:
br / Motor lacks torque and stalls easily
br / Width of the body makes it difficult to work at 90-degree angles with cutoff wheels.
br / Collet mechanism is made of metal, which is good. However the plastic housing around it it too soft and warps too easily, which is bad. Beware of overtightening the bits, because you may never be able to remove them. I've had a few that broke this way. I always tighten by hand, but when lending them out I usually don't warn the users about it and sometimes they come back with a bit stuck with no way to remove it.

THE GOOD
br /This Dremel 10.8 Lithium-Ion Cordless is very light and easy to use. It very versatile because it is cordless!
br /
br /THE BAD
br /The bad thing is it runs out of power too fast and it takes 3 hours to recharge. I don't know anything about the "smart charger" mentioned by a previous reviewer.
br /
br /If I connect the Flex-Shaft and fiber reinforced cutoff wheel, there is only enough charge to slice one 3/8 inch bolt. Then it takes 3 hours to recharge the Lithium battery.

br /WHAT DREMEL SHOULD HAVE DONE!
br /Dremel should have designed it with a 18 to 20 Volt Lithium-Ion Battery that will truly "quick charge".
br /
br /I will dump this Dremel when one of the other "name brands" comes out with a more powerful lithium cordless rotary tool. Unfortunately, Dremel is the only game in town at the moment.
br /This Dremel 10.8 Lithium-Ion Cordless is very light and easy to use.

Speed controller burned out after 2 months of moderate use - UPDATED 11/2008.

Thanks for your feedback
I've been using Dremel tools for about 10 years in my model making hobby/crafts, working mostly with soft plastic resin and soft and hard woods. I never had a problem with the corded tools and currently own 2 corded models (the pro with the digital speed control and the newer XPR after my 395 model was stolen). I thought I'd give going cordless a try, particularly since this tool didn't seem to be lacking in power. The speed controller burned out after 2 months of moderate use (sanding, cutting soft resin). I don't know if it was a lemon since it was working fine for two months. It now is only a two-speed, on and off. I'm sending it back to Dremel for service since it's obviously still under warranty but to pay for shipping myself and not even have an RMA to feel secure about sending it in with doesn't strike me as good customer service. At least they're not charging me (as far as I know) to ship it back after they're done fixing it. As a long time Dremel customer, I'm disappointed both with the product and the lack of customer support.
br /
br /UPDATE: I only think it's fair to follow up from my first negative review with the results of my return. I got around to sending the unit off for repair about a month after my review. I got it back from Dremel about 10 days after sending it (by First Class USPS). It came back by UPS. I can't tell if they fixed my old unit since it was fairly new when I sent it in, but what I got back was in like-new condition, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't someone else's refurbed unit, anyway. This one is still fine after over a year of use, so much so that the battery is starting to lose its ability to hold a charge--the way a well-used cordless tool should work. Yay, Dremel. They also sent me a flap-wheel attachment for my trouble. It's still in the package--I haven't found a use for it yet, but it's the thought that counts, I guess. If I could change my rating based on my experience with the repair, I would--to 4 stars. It's a good tool with good power. No cord means more mobility and in fact I've used it outside on my car or up on a ladder plenty of times, but battery is also less power.

This tool has all the power of a corded one, with convenience of cordless. Dremel did a great service to woodworkers and hobbyists by coming up with this one. I can't think of any way of improving on this great tool, other than Dremel offering an extra battery without having to buy a second charger.

It's a gadget world! Some gizmo's are okay and some set the standard. The Dremel Cordless Rotary Tool is a shop tool that you will find highly useful if you tinker or are a hobbyist of any type that builds things.
What I have learned since buying it. The case allows for the battery shipped to store in the hand tool, meaning you have a place for a 2nd lithium battery. As of the time of this review, Amazon didn't carry the battery, but can be found on eBay using search "Lithium Ion 855". $29.99 is pretty good price.
Amazon does sell the Dremel 697-05 Super Accessory 145 pc Assortment kit. You will need this. Very few tip attachments come with the factory tool kit. For $16.00, it's certainly worth the extra money and it comes with a free blade sharpener.
Not much more to say then if you have a tool bench and you spend time on your bench... you will want this.

Whenever a manufacturer presents a tool powered by batteries, it is my opinion that the re-charge of said battery should, at least, be close to the time it takes to drain the power through use of the tool. I purchased THREE batteries for use in my Lithium-Ion Cordless Dremel, and still had to wait an hour and a half when It ran out of gas. UNACCEPTABLE. I figured that I would need two more batteries, and another charger, or two, to be able to work constantly with this tool. Dremel, please find a way to reduce the charging time from three hours to one, and, market a charger that can charge multiple batteries at once. Until you do that, this tool is more of an interesting toy than anything else. Please note, I give these tools HEAVY use, and I will ALWAYS recommend Dremel products. Just not the battery powered ones at this time, unless your jobs are short, and light duty.

Wonderful little tool, though I thought the choice of accessories that came with it was completely random. I had abundance of certain things (cloth polishing wheels, sanding barrels, cutting wheels) but NO brushes or compound....so its off to DYI-center to start to round out the accessories....

We purchased this to replace the battery charger on the first one we bought 3 years ago. We use this to file down the nails of our two great danes. The coordless design is comfortably molded and easy to use. It was close enough in price that we figured we would just buy a new unit as we didn't know if the batter or the charger had gone bad on our first one. I use the dremel to modify my motorcycle fairings, install speakers in the door of my car, and even to cut a shock absorber in half that was stuck on my SUV. Ample power, comfortable grip, and versatile.

This product seems to have the same power as the one that is plugged in. However, there are alot of occasions when I need a smaller rotary tool outside and plugging it is becomes a hassle. I am finding are real great convenience tool so far. Still holding a charge for a long period. It seems to be just what I had hopped it would be.

Before Hurricane Katrina, we were living in an apartment in Bay St. Louis, MS, and building a house nearby. The house under construction and our apartment were destroyed, totally. Almost everything we owned was stored in a commercial storage unit that was under 20 feet of water. We could not get to the unit for three weeks and when we did, there was no electricity and everything was knee-deep in stinking mud, dark, and rusted. The only way I could get into my storage unit was with the diamond cutting wheel on my Dremel 800 -- I used it to cut the shank off the high-security lock on the unit. The owner of the units was so impressed he asked me to find a Dremel 800 in Baton Rouge, LA, and bring it to him. We set up a shuttle of charged batteries and replacement wheels -- he used his Dremel to cut off over 150 locks on storage units. Everything in our unit was a total loss but the Dremel performed flawlessly.

This is the most versitile of the dremel units available. It can perform a multiple number of tasks with ease. I have four of these units and can attest that the lithium battery holds a charge for a long time. The power indicator on the unit lets you know how much battery power you have left and the variable speed allows for performing a wide variety of tasks. It is well worth the price.

I did quite a bit of research before purchasing this model, and though some reviews elsewhere raised concerns about the power, I have had no problems. I recently used the metal cutting disc for the first time to install closet organizer shelving (had to cut it down to the right size) and it was great!! Prior to the Dremel I'd have been using a hacksaw. I suggest making sure you have a good pair of safety glasses, though - on the highest speed a lot of sparks flew. Occasionally it would stop - I guess this was the 'power' issue, but I found that if you turn it off for a second it comes right back on again.

I have been using a Dremel tool for a long time, the old ones had great ball bearings and powerful motors. Today, both the cordless nad the corded units are mass producted and the quality is fair at best. I have gone thru three of these 10.8 volt cordless. As soon as it heats up during normal use, it shuts off or starts to smoke. Once they smoke they have had it! Buy a new one. Customer service is great, but the tools are not what they use to be.

Finally a cordless tool that lives up to the hype. This thing has incredable power and battery life. That fact that it has a lithium battery instead of nicads or nickel metal battries is a big plus. It does not loose its charge if it sits unused. Cut the cord and buy this. You can't beat the quality and the balance of this tool.

I tried a number of other Dremel like tools that were cordless, but none could compare to this tool. If you need a rotary tool like this one, spend you money on this one. You will be glad you did.

br /There are several attachments that have come with it but I have not had the opportunity to diversify and use them yet. I got this mainly to start helping me remove grout between tiles. It works fine with this task though I realize it is going to take a lot of time since I am removing the grout for our entire kitchen floor.
br /
br /I would highly recommend this tool and consider it a valuable addition to my tools. I am also doing some baseboard replacements in my house and intend to use the Dremel to help match the ends of the baseboards too. From reading the guide that comes with the tool, there seems to be a number of projects I will be able to use this tool for in the days ahead.
br /
br /The attachments are a bit pricey though as one add'l attachment cost me $15 at Home Depot. It might be worth looking for a one off attachment set that would give a number of the specialized attachments needed.

I advise you get instructions on how to do this before trying this yourself, but it's great and fast. And of course, it's useful for all of my projects as well.

For homeowner use this is the bomb! I own a corded Dremel tool but this is so much more convient. I learned about this tool at a friends house that I was working on. With the cutoff blade I used it on 1/4 inch bolts, it cut like butter. I also used it to cut PVC water pipe, it cut like a HOT knife thru the plastic. Great power for the money.

First let me say that I am not a craftsman by any means, but have studied and purchased tools for many years. This tool has become one of my favorite tools in a short period of time. Here are some of my reasons.
br /
br /1) Customer service.
br /I had to call in because I didn't understand something on the unit and could not figure out the manual, and received a live person and the answer I needed in 1 minute!!! Unbelievable!! When I was at Menards looking for attachments to add to this unit, the sales people there didn't know squat, but I was able to get Dremel customer service on the phone after about a four minutes wait. She knew her stuff and helped me again. So they have the best customer service I have experienced with any tool company.
br /
br /2) Quality of the device. This tool is sturdy. It feels like a quality piece with practical and durable components. For example, the little collet nut is easy enough to loosen with your bare fingers, but it locks down tightly without a problem. This tells me that the 'crowns and roots' of the threading inside the nut and the threading on the housing of the unit is of a higher quality than some tools offer. This is a little thing, but it shows a company is detail oriented and not just cranking out parts as cheaply as possible. The housing is light and strong. A great engineering choice in my view. The adjustable pieces on this all work well. It has a metal hanging clip that works well with things like the Dremel Workstation or a hook on a peg board. Even the metal clip is a little better than some tools have. This is a good tool guys.
br /
br /3) Features. The features on this unit are all easy to use. The blue button to hold the collet in place while loosing the nut or tightening the nut is smooth and works with little pressure (that's a good thing if you just nailed your finger with a hammer). The thumbwheel speed control is variable. Variable speed is important for certain applications (some of them are explained in the 'Quick Start Book' that comes with the unit.
br /Not only is the variable speed smooth and easy to use, it's positioned so that you do not tend to bump the speed up or down while using it. That's another feature I like. The feel in the hand does not require a cramped hold, and so if you are older or have any kind of hand pain, this unit probably won't intensify your pain.
br /
br /4) Web support. If you are a visual learner or just don't feel like reading the books (there are two with this unit). Then you can go to the Dremel site and just click on videos. These are short and well done. I really enjoyed that. All the links worked well and the website is clean and up to date, unlike some companies I have worked with recently.
br /
br /5) Flexibility. One thing that the Hardware store clerks I spoke to and the Dremel person I spoke to did not know, is that this unit really works in attachments that do not specify the 8000 series. I found it works in the workstation as a drill press and as a wood shaper (free hand). The reason for this is that the housing nut matches the other Dremel units. A Dremel employee told me that the reason they don't recommend this model for certain attachments is because this is a battery operated unit. I found my new battery down only about 30% after 20 minutes of cutting and sanding. This unit also works really well with a variety of other brand accessories, like Ace Hardware's accessory packs (they are pretty good with more pieces for the money than other brands). In reality this is the only cordless Dremel that lasts long enough to work in the attachments they offer. So, with this cordless you can add attachments that don't list the 8000 series on the box.
br /
br /By the way, Dremel staff are trained to distinguish between attachments and accessories. Accessories are the mandrels, cutting discs, grinding and sanding tips, etc.... The attachments are the workstations, router guide, etc... I found that out by accidentally calling an attachment an accessory and then customer support started talking about the tips that go on the tool. It took a few minutes for me to figure out why she wasn't answering my question exactly. I had inadvertantly switched the topic because to the uninformed (me), accessories were the same as attachments. Anyhow, just remember that accessories are the bits and tips. Attachments are the jigs and other things that can be mounted onto the tool to accomplish drill press or routing, etc....
br /
br /6) Battery power is superior because it is the lithium pack. These last longer and are a major improvement over the two speed cordless that so many have complained about because it does not have a long lasting battery.
br /
br /7) Storeage case: The case has a spot for everything. The little wrench fits into a spot in the case that keeps it visible and snug. there is a slick spot for the books to slide into in the top half of the housing, which shows about a third of the book. Dremel has the title of the book visible in that third, so if you put it back in as they send it, you can see which book you are taking...the owners manual or the quick start book. The quick start book is a color book with a lot of pictures in it.
br /This book has become a source of a wide variety of ideas for using the tool to solve problems. Some are common problems and some are really neat. For example, the tell you what bit/piece to put into the tool and give you simple step by step instructions for how to prepare an egg shell and make it into a painted decorative present with a cut away section that enables you to put a photo in it or some decorative pieces. They give step by step pictures/instructions on how to make signs (like a street address sign). For every idea, the show the bit photo and part number needed. All the project ideas are organized into categories like: Outdoor projects, Indoor projects and Gift/Craft projects.
br /
br /This product is a mature product with a well thought out manual and project (quick start) book. Again I iterate that I've fallen in love with this tool. It's become one of my primary go to tools for small jobs around the house. I'll probably end up using it on my car and at work too. In my view it's a five star tool.
br /

I have owned a number of 120 Volt Dremel tools in the past. They sure are handy, but they haven't been the most reliable. This cordless, rechargeable Dremel is, by far, the best I've ever owned. It is built better - more solid. It has a very nice feel and grip. It's lightweight and easy to handle. It doesn't heat up like the 120 Volt Dremel's do. A charge lasts a long time; even when faced with large tasks. And, last, but not least, it operates and runs very smoothly and nicely. It simply is the best Dremel I've ever had.

I always heard about how useful a Dremel tool is, be it in my hobby RC car days, or my (current) auto-enthusiat days. So, I finally got my first dremel and it's awesome. It's easy to hold and adjust the speed on the fly. It's perfect for so many tasks. I've been looking around my house/car for things I can cut, drill, or sand just so I have more reason to use it. Not only is it fun, it's useful. I recommend you have one. You'll be surprised how many little jobs you will use this for that you would otherwise improvise with whatever tools you have for a makeshift job.

I bought this dremel to trim my dog's nail. I was concerned it might be too powerful but it's perfect on the lowest setting. The noise level is low and doesn't bother my dog. I wish I had purchased it years ago. I've only had a it a few weeks and have already used it for a home project as well.

This tool is way more versatile than I originally thought. It is well-balanced and remarkably easy to use. The battery charges quickly. Everything about this tool makes it a must-have. I've always thought it would great to own a Dremel, and with all the add-ons (wire brushes, polishers, cutters, grinders, sanders, etc) I'm sure I'll never rue the day I bought it.

I purchased the Dremel 8000-01 March 2007 and used it with the Dremel 1453 chain saw sharpening attachment to sharpen my chain saw. It worked just fine and did an OK job on my saw chains. I recharged the battery and stored it in the case. Last month (Nov 2007) I took the tool out to do a few small jobs. The tool was dead. I checked the battery (with a volt meter) and it was dead. I recharged the battery several hours and it still read zero volts. I knew the battery was defective so I called the customer service dept of Dremel to check on warranty service, I thought the tool was under a 2 year warranty. I was told I had no warranty and that a new replacement battery would be $45.40 (They are available on Amazon for $39.00). The Dremel 8000-01 tool came with 60 accessories and a carry case for $69.99 last March. I guess they could give away the tool and just sell replacement batteries and still come out. Anyway just thought you folks should know this little piece of info before deciding if you want a cordless 10.7 model...

I have had Dremel tools for years. Still have a 115 volt drill that has worked fine for years.
I purchased the Dremel 8000-01 because I could see it as a very useful tool. Well, the first one I had changed speeds on its own. I would set the speed I wanted, then without warning the speed would slow down or speed up, depending on the tools mood (I guess). Sometimes it did work just fine. So I returned the unit and received a replacement.
The second unit is really, really loud (a nasty high pitched whine) and it vibrates really bad a low speeds.
Needless to say it's going to be returned.
It's sad the Dremel quality control as fallen to this level. Because if the tool functioned properly I would be quite happy with it.
Should I try a third one?

I've had this tool for 2 years now and have used it 6 or 7 times. I originally purchased this to polish small parts.
br /
br /I recently needed to do some wood grinding and sanding on a dutch door at my home. I was disappointed with the lack of torque this tool had. It would slow down with even the slightest pressure to the wood. I was miffed. I found a neighbor who had an old corded dremel. As expected, it worked perfectly and didn't slow down at all.
br /
br /Just for the heck of it, I wrote Dremel an email outlining my issues with this cordless model. I received a response saying that Dremel tools aren't intended for projects where excessive torque was necessary. The email suggested that the tool bit is supposed to do all of the work. Since all of my bits are new (I haven't used any of them in the 2 years I've owned this tool!) and the corded model worked much better than the cordless model, I can only assume that Dremel knows of the limitations of this cordless model.
br /
br /I wanted this tool to work well but I can't recommend it for anything except light polishing. Maybe they'll get this right eventually. For now, you will probably have a much more productive experience if you purchase a corded model.

I personally don't own this product. But a friend of mine does. I own an earlier, less impressive cordless model / kit. I bought it at the time I installed a wood floor in my house and got the Dremel kit to ease my labor and help with applying mainly ½" molding.
br /
br /Please bear with me, even though I am talking about my older unit, I will relate this back to the unit / kit being offered.
br /
br /It did OK, but it was not as sturdy as I had hoped. Firstly, its battery life was short in comparison to the amount of force / effort you put behind doing a particular job. Another problem with the battery is that while it was being charged in its cradle, the unit was unusable. With some other devices, you could still use the tool even while it was being recharged (the cradle or cord provided allows for this). Its not convenient or recommended, but doable.
br /
br /As I said, the battery life was related to the degree of effort put to the task at hand and the type of job being performed. As the battery lost its charge, the unit became weaker and became virtually impossible to use.
br /
br /Another problem I experienced was that some of the tools broke if not used very carefully. It's a good thing they provide multiple sanding discs, because along with other accessories, they broke without much force on the user's part.
br /
br /The unit sometimes had a hard time maintaining a grip on certain items. I found it slipping at times, and sometimes, depending on the accessory installed, it totally lost its grip.
br /
br /Because of this and other problems, at one point I thought it may have been a defective unit, so I returned it for another, and experienced the same problems with the new unit.
br /
br /All the problems I experienced with my older Dremel Unit, I experienced with my friend's.
br /
br /The battery life was better, but it did not impress me as something I'd want to rely on. The gripping and accessories were also improved, but again, I was not overly impressed.
br /
br /I bought this kit to help with small and intricate jobs etc., and borrowed it from my friend for the same reason, but based on what I need it to do, it has fallen short of my expectations. Truthfully, of all the tools I have bought, this is one of the few that spends a majority of its time not being used.
br /
br /My thoughts are that it looks good and seems to sound good for what it says it does, but for now...it's not for me! Maybe it will improve over time.

I had wanted this Dremel for quite some time but I found this one to be much too delicate for my use. This particular Dremel Tools' (and perhaps all Dremel motors) use of what would seem to be plastic internal gearing make it unsuitable for tasks such as cutting a single thin wall tile -- even though Dremel sells bits claiming to be designed for this purpose. I mention plastic gears although I have not disassembled the tool to confirm this suspicion but regardless of the actual material used this item is too delicate for some uses that Dremel claims it is capable of. Caveat emptor!

Don't get me wrong, Dremel Rotary Tools are nice ... and the idea sounds great ... but I've found the reality to be that they are less useful than initially thought.
Another drawback ... the price of accessories. Dremel must think their poo don't stink, because the prices are outrageous on accessories (which you'll need to make the tool useful).
